Editorial Reviews

With the long-anticipated release of Love, Hate and Then There's You, The Von Bondies' third studio album and their debut for Majordomo Records, fans will experience a band that's come a long way since 2004's smash album, Pawn Shoppe Heart. Now in their ninth year together, Jason Stollsteimer and drummer Don Blum have taken their music to new places while holding on to the core values they've always exhibited. Love, Hate and Then There's You picks up from the tighter, more nuanced sound of the 2004 hit single "C'mon C'mon," which subsequently took on a second life as the theme to Denis Leary's highly acclaimed FX TV series Rescue Me. On riff-happy tracks like first single "Pale Bride" and the anthemic leadoff track "This Is Our Perfect Crime," on pounders like "I Don't Wanna" and "Chancer," and on the album-closing "Modern Saints" with its nearly ethereal intro, this is a Von Bondies with a renewed sense of purpose.

Best By Far

I bought Pawn Shop Heart mostly for "C'mon C'mon" like most folks. And though it was a good record nothing really stood out other than their smash hit. But with Love Hate And Then There's You, the Von Bondies really show some growth and the entire record its great all the way through. They keep the energy going and really make one of the best albums this year. Pick it up

Best Pop Record of 2009

This will probably go down as my favorite pop record of 2009. And if it came out in 2008, "Pale Bride" (first single) would had been my theme song. At times The Von Bondies sound like The Ponys if they were produced by Ric Ocasek and forced to write happier sounding pop songs without sacrificing one morbidly jaded lyric or theme. I am not sure about the new wing ladies but I like their vocal additions better than what I heard on 2004's Pawn Shoppe Heart. In fact I would go as far as to say the back-up vocals actually make songs like "The Chancer" rather than just complimenting the overall arrangement. In 2004, The Von Bondies may have been shouting "Come On, Come On" but I wasn't compelled to go because the party seemed dull and overhyped. Love Hate and Then There's You feels warm and fun. Now I want to come, even when it is hard for the party's host (Jason Stollsteimer) to smile and the cake served is bittersweet.

ONLY A GOOD START...... BUT........

Really Good, if you ask me

This album has pretty good tracks on it. The songs are very catchy and fun to listen to, and the singer has a rather nice and raw way of singing. However, if you're one of those people who MUST have meaningful and unique lyrics to enjoy a song, you're going to be somewhat disappointed. Still, there are some tracks on here that you're sure to get stuck in your head within seconds of listening to them.

Well played, sirs

I kind of wrote this band off as the soundtrack to Rescue Me, a show I really dug until it turned into Desperate Housewives for guys. Anyhoo! The opening track on this album got my immediate attention and then held it for more or less the entire album. It's very high energy and I listen to it when I run and work out.

I'm not going to pick apart the songs, but if you're looking for some good, high energy rock, sample of the songs, you might like this album a lot.

Looking forward to the next!
